49 years is a long time. 49 years ago, a loaf of bread cost 11p, the Bay City Rollers were #1 in the charts, and Margaret Thatcher became the leader of the opposition party. A lot has changed in that time. But the appreciation and excitement for the annual Wheels Day car show has remained a constant.

When a show has been running for so long, it can be hard to keep it fresh. But as the saying goes, build it and they will come, and the Surrey Street Rodders reinvigorated Wheels Day perfectly with a fantastic new venue. Not to be defeated by the atrocious weather the day before, the organising team persevered through high winds and torrential downpours – losing a few marques and items of equipment in the process – to pull off a fantastic event.

Our roving reporter set off bright and early, meeting up with fellow Ford Pop owners at Reading Services before the final leg of the journey to Newbury Showground. Located just off the M4, the new venue is ideal and is accessible from most areas of the country. There were even cars from the Southwest regions who hadn’t attended before!

Sitting in the car with a flask of coffee and hot cross buns, we allowed the shower to pass overhead, watching the cars roll into showground – what a great way to start the day! By mid-morning, most areas were full of hotrods, custom cars, and classic vehicles all of whom had also made their annual pilgrimage to Wheels Day.

As the showers cleared, the brollies came down and everyone spent the day admiring the cars, visiting the traders, and catching up with good friends after the winter months. Wandering around the showfield, we were particularly drawn to a very smart dark blue Ford Pop, a 1950 3100 Chevy Pickup, a fenderless Ford Model T Doctors Coupe, and a blue 1936 Business Coupe. And it seems that we have good taste, as the latter two also went home with Top 10 Awards!
