Taking a small British classic car to new heights – 6,000 metres above sea level, to be precise.

ClassicLine’s resident road tripper, Ben Coombs, is no stranger to high-altitude motoring. In 2018, they reached a high point of around 4,700m in Bolivia’s Altiplano in a TVR Chimaera. But this was only a small part of the road trip which formed the Pub2Pub Expedition – a casual drive from the Northern most pub in the world, 400 miles north of Tromso in Norway, to the Southernmost pub in the world, in Tierra del Fuego on the tip of the South American continent. Driving 26,500 miles across 25 countries is no mean feat for a nearly 25-year-old sports car!

As the Pub2Pub team returned from this incredible adventure in April 2018, this is where ClassicLine’s affiliation began. We met Ben in a quaint country pub two hours after he rolled off the EuroTunnel train following seven months driving around the world.

Ben and the Pub2Pub team have quite a history of adventure road tripping. From the Mongul Rally in a Mini, to driving across Africa in a classic Porsche, and even a drive to Vietnam in a V8 C4 Corvette. Pub2Pub now runs a series of successful European driving experiences, and their fleet of classic cars including the TVR Chimaera, 1988 Volvo 240 and Mini 1000, are all insured with ClassicLine Insurance.

Not one to turn down a long-distance drive in an unusual classic car, Ben began the latest expedition, the Mini6000 Expedition, in December 2023.

The trusty steed of choice for the Mini 6000 is his 1974 supercharged Mini 1000 named Daisy. Accompanied by a 1990 Range Rover as a support vehicle and their expedition partners Detour Roadtrips, the cars were shipped to Uruguay, arriving in the Port of Montevideo on Monday 27th November 2023.

The crew have now driven 1,300 miles deep into the Atacama, camping and overlanding each night, and they are preparing the make the ascent. Exploring the towering volcanoes of Chile and Peru in search of possible roads or tracks to lead them to their summit.

And the goal? To take this recognisable small British classic car to new hights – 6,000 metres above sea level, to be precise. Expect dirt track roads, extreme temperatures, altitude sickness, and the usual classic car ailments. This is set to be an expedition never seen before!

As a headline sponsor, ClassicLine Insurance is excited to be along for the ride and bringing you all the latest updates. So, stay tuned to find out if this low slung Mini can be coaxed 6,000 metres above sea-level.
