Often thought of as the natural home for a specific make of car, an ‘owners club’ is a place for all those who want to enjoy the Marque and the benefits the club has to offer, and for all those who are interested in ownership. A friendly place where you can meet likeminded people, share technical advice and enjoy your classics together.

One club that offers a space for all Triumph car owners and enthusiasts to come together is the Triumph Sports Six Club. Established 40 years ago, the Triumph Sports Six Club promotes the preservation of all Triumph models and is now one of the world’s largest Marque specific clubs.

We caught up with Commercial Director and Courier Editor, Bernard Robinson, to find out more about the world’s largest Triumph car Club…

The Club

Founded in 1977, the Triumph Sports Six Club (TSSC) has traditionally catered for Herald and Spitfire based vehicles including the Herald, Spitfire, Vitesse, GT6, Bond Equipe and Specials based on the mother chassis or mechanicals. Then almost 16 years ago, at the request of members, the TSSC opened the doors of the Club to enthusiasts of all Triumph models.

Today, the Club is run by Triumph enthusiasts; a dedicated team of 4 paid staff and 7 volunteers based at their Leicestershire HQ. The team can help you source parts, give technical advice and put you in touch with other members who can help with your restoration questions via the club Forum. Between them they have a combined experience of Triumph ownership of over 150 years!

With 5,500+ membership based all across the UK and worldwide, the Club is open to anybody who has an interest in Triumph cars and their derivatives, or who is looking to purchase one in the future. As well as specialist insurance discounts with ClassicLine, club members can also benefit from a range of supplier discounts from Triumph spares specialists. Nearly all parts are available, even some that went out of production years ago. Many are now being re-manufactured and are available through various firms.

The Team

The TSSC has a great team at the helm and they are all Triumph owners too!

Chris is the Club Chairman/General Secretary and a Register Secretary, Angie is the Membership Secretary, Bernard is the Commercial Manager and Courier Editor, Jane is the Social Media Director, Tracey looks after the Club’s finances, Trudi handles accounts, and Nigel Hill and Diane Allen are the Area Liaison Officers. Completing the Management team are Neville and Tom. There is also an International Liaison Secretary who ensures that overseas members are catered for.

Supporting the team in the HQ, there are a great contingent of regional reps looking after members in their local area. Local areas are an important facet of the Club and help retain the small club atmosphere whilst providing the national member services.

The Headquarters

The TSSC originally moved into their current HQ in Lubenham, just a stone’s throw from us in Leicestershire, over 25 years ago and the site has changed dramatically during that time. As well as housing administration facilities for the club, the site has a whole range of facilities for members.

There is a Members’ Research Library where you can relive 60’s nostalgia with video footage of the Spitfires at Le Mans, or join the marathon trip across Africa with two development Heralds. The Research Centre is great for finding out more about Triumph cars and the extensive library means questions can be easily and quickly answered.

The TSSC HQ boasts the largest collection of Triumph memorabilia. From an ex-motor show Herald Launch chassis to an exclusive selection of Michelotti originals, it’s a great place for any Triumph fan. The car exhibits are constantly changing, and rarer exhibits include a Herald 1200 Coupe (The Herald Model celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year), Courier Van & 13/60 Est and a MK1 Vitesse Convertible, Bond Equipe No 1, GT6 MKIII, a one off works 4 Door Herald Prototype and a very rare Herald ‘S’ plus 2 Spitfire MKIIs in Standard and Race Trim.

Of course, no world headquarters is complete without a shop! As well as club regalia, you can browse the range of Triumph publications and even pick up essential spares for your Triumph. From key fobs to ignition systems, it’s all there.

Once you have finished looking at the exhibits and must have items in the shop…refuel in the HERALD Members Coffee Bar which has been carefully restored from the original pub which stood outside the Triumph factory in Canley, Coventry!

The Cars

Traditionally the Club catered for Herald and Spitfire based vehicles including the Herald, Spitfire, Vitesse, GT6, Bond Equipe and Specials based on the mother chassis or mechanicals. The Club also features a Register for the Herald engined amphibious Amphicar. More latterly, the Club encompassed the promotion and preservation of Standard Triumph vehicles and opened its doors to all Standard Triumphs including the 1300/1500 Dolomite models, TR range, Stag, 2000/2500 series and more.

The Magazine

The Courier is the monthly magazine of the Triumph Sports Six Club. Edited by Bernard Robinson, there is over 100 glossy pages full of advice, events information, area news, register and technical articles as well as classifieds covering parts and cars for sale. The TSSC are proud that they have received two ‘Club Magazine of the Year’ awards over the years!

The Events

With the Clubs’ credo of “Do More with your Your Triumph!“, the TSSC a host a variety of indoor and outdoor events throughout the year, with over 60 Local Areas meeting at least once a month. Formal and social events, treasure hunts, camping weekends and country drives are organised on a National, Regional and Local Area basis culminating in the Inter Club – Triumph Weekend – the event everyone looks forward it! This year’s event will be held at Stratford Upon Avon Racecourse on the 18th August 2019 and is co-hosted by the TR Register. With its international concours and specialist autojumble the Inter Club Triumph Weekend is the largest Triumph event on the calendar.
