If all the UK’s motorhomes and touring caravans were placed nose to tail then they would stretch across the Atlantic, according to research by specialist insurer ClassicLine Insurance.

The distance, based on a mid-sized motorhome, would actually be 3,295 miles, almost exactly the same as travelling from London to Boston but just about 200 miles short of travelling from London to New York.

Data suggests there are 780,000 motorhomes and touring caravans in the UK, with a mid-sized motorhome being 6.8 metres in length, while the maximum length caravan which can be towed by a vehicle up to 3,500kg is 7 metres.

The UK has always had a love affair with caravans and motorhomes, and this proves it.

Ian Fray, managing director at ClassicLine Insurance, said: “It’s incredible to think that they would reach Boston in the US if they were all placed nose to tail starting in London. That’s one impressive transatlantic crossing!”

Meanwhile, with the summer holidays in full swing, ClassicLine Insurance is reminding all motorists, and particularly motorhome and caravan owners on the roads in increased numbers, to make some pre-journey vehicle safety checks before heading off.

These include checking tyres for the correct air pressure, tread depth and overall condition, inspecting car and motorhome wiper blades for wear and tear, plus making sure all lights work properly.
